Similar to Uber swe. Leetcode and system design. And don't listen to all these uninformed comments about atg. It's a mission critical project for the company. As Uber experienced exponential growth over the last few years, now supporting 14 million trips each day, our engineers proved they could build for scale. A significant portion of this work involves creating machine learning ML models to handle tasks such as processing sensor input, identifying objects, and predicting where those objects might go.

The many models needed to solve this problem, and the large team of engineers working on them, creates a management and versioning issue in itself. We initially address this problem by defining a five-step life cycle for the training and deployment of ML models in our self-driving vehicles.

This life cycle begins with data ingestion and goes all the way to model serving, with steps along the way to ensure our models perform well. This process lets us effectively accelerate the iteration of our self-driving vehicle components, continually refining them to perform to the highest standards.

We can further benefit by automating this process to help manage the many models in development. Due to the deep dependencies and development complexity of ML models in the self-driving domainwe developed VerCD, a set of tools and microservices to support our ML workflow.

ML teams developing models at scale may find that the practices and tools, presented here as our five-step model life cycle and VerCD, developed at Uber ATG for self-driving vehicles can apply to a number of use cases, helping them iterate on their own infrastructure. Many of our self-driving vehicle components use ML models, enabling them to drive safely and accurately.

A component consists of one or more ML models, and all the components together form our self-driving vehicle software :.

Each component builds on the output generated by the previous component to help safely steer our self-driving vehicles on the right course toward their destinations. The ML models that comprise these components go through our five-step iteration process, ensuring their optimal operation.

ML models make predictions, forecasts, and estimates based on training using historic data. We offload this data from the vehicles to our servers, where our labeling team creates the labels that form the ground truth output that we want our ML models to learn. Typically, the labeling team manually assigns labels to the actors in a given scene.

These labels provide the location, shape, and other attributes such as object type for each actor in the scene. We use these labels to train our ML applications so they can later predict the information that the labels contain types of objects and their coordinates for new data captured from the sensors.

Our ML stack, in which we develop and run the ML models, consists of multiple layers, from the ML applications themselves at the highest layer to the hardware they run on at the lowest layer. Our ML model life cycle, shown in Figure 1, below, consists of five stages.Main menu Contents Want to see the real deal? More inside scoop? View in App close. Privacy and Terms.

KST ; Hall B Summary: We map complex lane topologies in highways by formulating the problem as a deep directed graphical model, where the nodes of the graph encode geometric and topological properties of the local regions of the lane boundaries.

We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on two major North American highways in two different states, and show high precision and recall as well as 93 percent correct topology. KST ; Hall D2 Summary: We design a novel autoencoder-based architecture for compressing a stereo image pair that extracts shared information from the first image in order to reduce the bitrate of the second image.

We demonstrate a percent reduction in the second image bitrate at low bitrates. Without any fine-tuning, DMM-Net performs comparably to state-of-the-art methods on the SegTrack version two data set. KST ; Hall B Summary: We propose a real-time dense depth estimation approach using stereo image pairs, which utilizes differentiable Patch Match to progressively prune the stereo matching search space.

JST Summary: Our research shows that non-parametric distributions can capture extremely well the erratic pedestrian behavior. We propose Discrete Residual Flow, a convolutional neural network for human motion prediction that accurately models the temporal dependencies and captures the uncertainty inherent in long-range motion forecasting.

JST Summary: We propose a novel open-set instance segmentation algorithm for point clouds that identifies instances from both known and unknown classes. In particular, we train a deep convolutional neural network that projects points belonging to the same instance together in a category-agnostic embedding space. CST; Room LG-R15 Summary: We propose a novel method to jointly learn the linear weights of the interpretable cost functions of behavior planning and trajectory generation from human demonstrations.

Experiments on real-world self-driving data demonstrate that the jointly learned planner performs significantly better compared to baselines that do not adopt joint behavior and trajectory learning, under certain circumstances.

Forecasting at Uber: An Introduction September 6, April 16, Sign up for Uber Engineering updates:.At Uber ATG, developing a safe self-driving car system not only means training it on the typical traffic scenarios we see every day, but also the edge cases, those more difficult and rare situations that would even flummox a human driver.

An important component of developing self-driving cars involves humans driving along city streets, using radar, LiDAR, cameras, and other sensors to collect data. The data gathered by these human-driven cars not only shows what road infrastructure looks like, but also the complex interactions of vehicles, pedestrians, and other actors. The traffic scenarios we derive from this data capture the typical, such as a crowd of pedestrians crossing the street, to more difficult edge cases, like cars caught in an intersection after the light changes.

We use these traffic scenarios to develop machine learning models that help our self-driving cars safely react to common, and not so common, scenarios that come up in a given operational domain. With this system, ATG developers can query the dataset to refine our models by training them on those difficult cases and scenarios. One of the keys to quickly iterate on gathering training data for machine learning is to have a robust and scalable data solution that can run complex queries efficiently.

As a result, we developed the ATG Analytics Platform, which contains all of our labelled data in modeled tables so we can query our data. This data describes actors in traffic scenarios including bicyclists, pedestrians, and different vehicle types, so a query could ask for scenarios where bicyclists are present. We also cover specific types of traffic movement, so, for example, we can focus on situations involving left turns, and road geometries, which allows even greater query granularity.

Unlock pc with rfid card

These specific scenarios can then be used to train our self-driving cars to safely navigate a traffic situation with bicyclists. This library allows developers to add data publishers anywhere in their workflows. Modeled tables are crucial in making our data useful for training self-driving cars to operate safely. Instead of writing custom ETL pipelines and convoluted functions, autonomy engineers can query modeled tables in a fast and straightforward way, finding the types of scenarios they need to iterate on training.

We adopted the dimensional modeling paradigm as our data modeling methodology, allowing us to strike a balance between storage and computation costs. Having trustworthy data is the first step to successful modeling.

The second part is to have a set of battle-tested analytical tools available in our daily workflows. These tools provide web and programmatic interfaces that allow engineers and data scientists to write SQL queries and Spark jobs against our data warehouse.

For example, when processing ground truth-labeled data, a pipeline scans every log, frame-by-frame, extracting data at a frequency of 10 frames per second. A data producer can incorporate these fields and then partition and publish them to HDFS using our internal Python library.

This job enables us to build a Hive metastore, which allows users to query data as a Hive table using a language like SQL. Uber ATG also has an internal tool called QueryBuilder that provides all the functionality of a relational database frontend while also providing state-of-the-art visualization tools to understand the story behind the data.

This data and associated visualizations allow engineers to identify and understand how our perception model performs geospatially. Being able to run queries of this nature and visualize them is extremely useful for iterating on autonomy models because it helps us gain more insight into the data and find more underrepresented scenes that we need to train the model on.

Training our model on these less common scenes ensures our self-driving cars will react safely if they encounter a similar situation while out on the road. Data is the fuel ushering Uber ATG into the self-driving future. The ability to query data that replicates traffic scenarios ranging from the everyday to the very rare will help prepare our self-driving cars for any situation. Data accessibility and proper tooling, as demonstrated by the ATG Analytics Platform, enable autonomy engineers and scientists to unlock the potential behind the significant volume of data that we have amassed at ATG.

Better intelligence around our self-driving car logs gives Uber a strategic edge as we efficiently iterate on world-class machine learning models. There is no shortage of work to be done in making the future of self-driving cars a reality. If you are interested in riding along with us during this exciting time, join us!

If so, your first step after applying, of course is to meet with our team and interview to determine if Uber is the right fit for you! Read on to learn more about the steps it takes to master the technical interview process, including tips, takeaways, and other advice for how to stand out as a candidate and find a home within Uber Engineering.

During this call they will ask you to describe your technical experience and why you are interested in the position you applied for, as well as get a better sense of what you are looking for in a technical role. If the opportunity seems like a good fit for both your career goals and our needs, they will schedule a technical phone screen between you and a software engineer or engineering manager on the team you are applying to.

If the role you applied for has already been filled or we learn that there is an even better fit for your interests and skill set elsewhere in the company, we will suggest other openings for you to consider applying to. If all goes well, we will invite you to an on-site interview. The next sections describe how to prepare for these interviews and what to expect throughout the Uber Engineering interview process. It is a good idea to begin prepping for your technical interviews very early in the process—even before submitting an application.

Your preparation should include three key components: preparing to talk about yourself, reviewing computer science fundamentals, and working on practice problems. When talking about your previous experience, be sure to explain your personal contribution. For example, if you were part of a team developing a full-stack web application, be specific about what you contributed to the project.

This is critical in helping us identify the best role s to meet both your needs and ours. Your memory of computer science fundamentals may be a bit rusty. Reviewing basic data structures and algorithms in advance of your interview will help you recognize when they could play a role in solving interview problems, for example, recognizing that the data for a question naturally fits into a tree structure might push you toward a recursive solution.

Discussing these basic concepts is often an afterthought for more seasoned professionals compared to discussing actual work experience, but it never hurts to be prepared. In fact, your first attempt at solving a problem might result in a naive O n 2 solution, and recognizing this could give you an idea of how to solve the same problem in O n log n time. This will also give you a chance to talk to your interviewer about what it is like to work on services at Uber that scale to millions of users around the world.

Once you have refreshed your knowledge of data structures and algorithms, go through as many programming practice problems as you can. To simulate a realistic interview you should give yourself a time limit of about 30 minutes.
