Police have declared war on the Rebels Motorcycle Club of Australia, saying it will not be allowed to establish here. But is it too late? And how big is the threat, really? By Tony Wall. Of course, the Rebels say they are not a gang at all, but a "club" dedicated to riding bikes.

To dispel that myth, police released figures showing that the 17 patched Rebels members identified in New Zealand have nearly convictions for serious drug and violence offences between them, and cumulatively have served 77 years in prison. A further 14 associates have notched up an impressive 90 years' jail time between them. Police last month claimed to have dealt the Rebels a "severe blow" with a series of methamphetamine raids across the North Island, although it remains unclear how many of those arrested were Rebels and what role they played in the drug operations.

Essentially, some Tribesmen Motorcycle Club members with familial links to the Rebels in Australia have "patched over". Now everyone is waiting to see whether the entire Tribesmen gang goes over.

Sources say this could lead to a domino effect where clubs affiliated to the Tribesmen, such as the Huhus of Tokoroa and the Greasy Dogs of Tauranga, switch.

The Nomads of Horowhenua, in disarray since the death of notorious leader Dennis "Mossie" Hines, are also believed to be in talks with the Rebels, even though they are not a motorcycle club. The Tribesmen are an interesting bunch. One of the first groups to import and manufacture meth, they lost power and respect in the gang scene when they sampled too much of their own product, earning the nickname "Friedsmen". A source with contacts in several outlaw motorcycle clubs says the Rebels are trying to unite the "second tier" of homegrown clubs to take on the might of the Hells Angels, which, with its international connections, controls most of the meth trade along with its ally, the Head Hunters.

It's a meth war out there; the monetary stakes are incredibly high. The Rebels will employ a "Genghis Khan approach It's a turf war — stay tuned to see if the Bandidos [a US motorcycle club with branches in Australia] try their hand here.

They won't want to be seen to be losing ground to the Rebels — wherever their mortal enemy goes, they will follow.

It's the international connections that police fear most. In Australia, the Rebels are involved in meth, cocaine and cannabis distribution and have been involved in intimidation, extortion, inter-gang violence and murder, Kane says. He says police, along with their colleagues in Australia, have been monitoring movements across the Tasman of Rebels members. At this stage, the gang's presence here seems to be on a relatively small scale, at the level of blood ties.

But that could change if all Tribesmen patch over. It's a moving feast really. We're monitoring the situation very closely — there are a number of potential options that could play out here. The professor of psychology at Australia's Victoria University has studied outlaw motorcycle gangs across the ditch and says that while the Rebels are the biggest club numbers-wise, it's simply not a big player on the Australian crime scene, much less the world one.

The Rebels aren't even near that league. They do have a few links but, my God, for an international club, they're hardly a major threat. We had the Outlaws move here, which in terms of pure crime, are one of the top international clubs. The gang members, all males, were aged from early 20s to late 60s, and riding mostly Harley-Davidsons. Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said police had spoken to the gang members and had no issues with them.

Motorcyclists on southern roads needed to be aware of heavy rain and strong wind gusts, Snr Sgt Benn said. He advised riders and motorists to drive to the conditions and reduce their speed where necessary.

Earlier this year, a barbershop linked to the Mongols was hit by a suspicious fire and, in retaliation, nearly bullets were fired at a home of a Mongrel Mob leader. While a truce of sorts has been reached between the Mongols and Mongrel Mob, simmering tensions between the Mongols — marked by their distinctive symbol of Genghis Khan riding a motorcycle — and the Greazy Dogs MC are close to boiling point.

A fight broke out in which neighbours reported hearing gunshots, although no one was shot and police did not find any bullet or shell casings left behind. Vastly outnumbered, the Mongol and his family — including a heavily pregnant woman — fled by jumping over a high fence at the back of the property.

One of the family members suffered a badly fractured ankle from the high drop. The Mongol member is alleged to have been carrying two shotguns with him, which he stashed in the property of a frightened neighbour for safekeeping.

He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and declined bail when he appeared in the Tauranga District Court last week. The terrifying confrontation is the latest in a string of incidents in which the Mongols have been targeted by rivals since establishing themselves in the Bay of Plenty last year. A few months before the barber shop was vandalised and burned, three cars parked outside the Papamoa home where senior Mongols were living were destroyed in a suspicious fire.

Police data shows club members now number more than for the first time, up 50 per cent between December and December In the Bay of Plenty alone there are club members — the most of any police district. The Mongols were first established in the United States in and spread to 12 other countries, including Australia recently where they quickly earned a reputation for ruthless violence.

A decade-long prosecution ended in December with a Californian jury finding the Mongol Nation to be a criminal enterprise guilty of racketeeringconspiracy to murder, attempted murder and drug dealing.

The case was the result of an investigation, Operation Black Rain, in which four undercover agents successfully infiltrated the Mongols to become full-patch members. Four other agents also went undercover to pose as their girlfriends.

The revelations come as police investigate two other gang-linked slayings in the region. The hit on affiliates of the Mongrel Mob - the country's largest gang - was ordered by the Tauranga-based motorcycle gang Greazy Dogs after a failed deal with the Mob, the source alleges. It is understood police have obtained correspondence between Mob members discussing the gang deal. The target of the shooting was senior Mongrel Mob member Mark Griffiths. The early hour hit on July 8 resulted in the death of Robert Nelson, 23, who was the partner of Griffiths' daughter Kahlee Marfell, It is understood three men brandishing guns knocked on the door of Griffiths' rented Matthews Crescent home in Melville just after 1am.

Marfell answered the door and the men asked for her father. In a panic, Marfell attempted to slam the door and run from the gunmen.

She was gunned down in the hallway. Nelson, who was in bed at the time, came out of the room and was fatally shot. He remains in a critical condition at Auckland Hospital. Marfell underwent surgery and has since been released from Waikato Hospital. Sources close to the investigation said Griffiths was at the address when the shooting happened.

The house owners say Griffiths had installed a keypad lock on the bedroom door. Five days after the shooting, the Matthews Cres house was set alight. A car was seen leaving the scene just after 9pm.
